The manhunt for a suspect in the shooting of a Webbers Falls police officer Monday ended in Grants, N.M., early Monday morning with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Webbers Falls is in Muskogee County, near the Sequoyah County line.
State and area lawmen had been searching for Billy Wayne Williams in Eastern Oklahoma since a Blue Alert was sounded.
The officer reportedly received a superficial gunshot wound after making a routine traffic stop at about 5:45 p.m. Sunday.
The suspect fled and at one point, according to McIntosh County Chief Deputy Jared West, was spotted in the Porum area.
Multiple agencies joined in the search, including the OSBI, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Cherokee Marshals and the McIntosh County Sheriff ’s office.
Williams was described as 5-11, 380 pounds and armed and dangerous.
A press release from the Grants Police Department said officers used a Flock License Plate Reader to identify a white Nissan Altima the suspect reportedly was driving.
After the vehicle was caught on the camera, officers searched the area and found the car in a Walmart parking lot, where it was occupied by the suspect.
Officers attempted to contact the suspect when a gunshot was heard.
Williams was treated at the scene for a gunshot wound to the stomach by EMS and taken to an Albuquerque hospital in critical but stable condition.
