“God helps those who help themselves” is a phrase that is not found in the Bible. This saying is usually attributed to Ben Franklin, quoted in Poor Richard’s Almanac in 1757. In actuality, it originated from Algernon Sydney in 1698 in an article titled Discourses Concerning Government. It goes along with other phrases that are not in the Bible like – “Money is the root of all evil and cleanliness is next to Godliness.”
Whatever the original source of this saying, the Bible teaches the opposite.
God helps the helpless! “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.” Romans 5:6. In our deepest spiritual needs we are helpless. We cannot save ourselves. We cannot redeem our sinfulness. We are desperate, weak and needy. Our only hope is seeking the Lord and his great mercy. The beautiful thing is that God wants to save us, he wants to see us set free and placed on solid footing. Romans 10:9 tells us, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Jesus established His Church to help people know Him and his amazing grace. First Baptist Church would love to help you do that!
