The campaign against the Sioux is from all indications a complete failure. On July 4, the settlers at the mouth of the Tongue river were alarmed by the report that Sitting Bull with 1,800 warriors was within 20 miles of them and coming to clean them out. The report was without the slightest foundation, however, for, as I informed you several days since, that chief is certainly in British America, where he will remain as long at the buffalo stay there, which will be for some time yet.
The united commands of the second and seventh cavalry and four companies of the 22nd infantry, mounted, have left the Tongue river country and are now scouting to the north of the Yellowstone.
The expedition will endeavor to take in the Milk river country before it returns to the Tongue river cantonment.
