Oklahoma high school student-athletes traveling excessive distances to play for new schools may be violating the terms of a onetime transfer policy, the leader of the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association said Wednesday.
“We’re watching that closely,” Executive Director David Jackson told board members. In January, the OSSAA board voted to let student-athletes change high schools once without having to wait a year before competing.
Students applying for the Rule 8 exception must show that they continue to live with the parents/guardians where eligibility was previously established.
One of the restrictions with allowing that exception is the student continues to live with the people they always lived with and are they really truly making that drive or are they telling us that and living with a friend or another family member in the district.
Jackson said the organization, which approved 433 of 445 waiver requests, is “going deeper” when it comes to vetting cases where student-athletes are driving long distances to compete.
The board also approved 2024-25 Average Daily Membership numbers, which determine classifications for basketball and several other sports for the upcoming school year.
Football and softball for the 2024 season, and baseball and soccer for 2025 are not affected by the 2024-25 ADM.
