Last week, the House recognized National Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day in Oklahoma. I want to thank all the law enforcement officers in House District 13 for keeping our communities safe and secure.
This week, we’re showing our respect and support for law enforcement, survivors, and citizens. Our police play an important role in protecting our communities, responding to emergencies, and maintaining public order. Every day, they put their lives on the line to protect others. I am proud to publicly stand up and say I back the blue.
During the past year, 136 officers nationwide have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty, including Captain John Robert Randolph III of the Ringling Police Department in Oklahoma. With House Resolution 1050, the House honored these brave individuals and extended its deepest condolences to the families and colleagues of these fallen officers.
In the past two sessions, I have backed legislation to extend compensation eligibility to first responders who suffer from mental injury or illness due to their duty. Our first responders bravely risk their lives daily to ensure the safety and security of their community. Therefore, it is crucial to guarantee that law enforcement officers have access to mental health services.
We had our final group of pages this week. This year, we received two great pages from House District 13: Samuel Dunn and Owen Ellis. Both showed great enthusiasm for the legislative process. The Page Program is an opportunity for students to see how the state government works. I encourage any interested junior or senior high school students to apply next year. Congratulations to all the graduates in House District 13! You’ve made it. Your hard work has paid off. Whether off to college, diving into a career, or exploring new opportunities, I know you’ll do great. The future is looking bright, and I have no doubt you’ll accomplish amazing things.
