The Oktaha Tigers (32-3) won the Class 2A State Baseball Championship with a 155, six-inning victory over No. 3 Cashion Saturday at Shawnee’s Ed Skelton Field at Memorial Park.
In the bottom of the first,
Oktaha lead off man Kale Testerman hit a double and then immediately was driven in by Maddox Edwards who also got on base with a double. Darren Ledford drove in Edwards to make the score 2-2 on an RBI single and then crossed the plate himself as Braxton Casey hit into a fielder’s choice to give Oktaha a 3-2 lead.
The Cashion Wildcats (326) took the lead on three runs on three hits in taking a 5-4 lead in the third inning.
Oktaha responded in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Tigers scored seven runs on six hits to go ahead 11-5. The Tigers’ highlight was when Nic Tolbert smashed a three-run double.
Braxton Casey, Mason Pickering and Kipton Christian all scored a run for Oktaha in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 14-5. Christian hit into a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to end the game.
The Tigers tallied 16 hits in the victory as Ledford and Edwards both had three each while Testerman, Christian and Elam each had two hits.
The win is the first spring championship in six attempts for the No. 1 Oktaha Tigers who have two fall titles, the last in 2017.
