The Oklahoma Baptist University Theatre Department will perform an original musical production at Legacy on Main Street, 224 N. Main, Saturday, May 4.
“Dreamers: A Depression Era Musical Fairytale” is by OBU creative writing major Elena Streett.
Streett wrote the book, music and lyrics.
Tickets are $20. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m.
Set in a rural farming community in 1930s California, “Dreamers” follows Myrtle, an independent, romantic young woman who meets a drifter named Max and makes choices that drastically change her future. Five years later, she is forced to work through her tragic past when she returns home to reconcile with her family.
This is a love story that takes place during one of the most challenging times in American history – moving from the Depression into World War II.
“When I began working on ‘Dreamers’ in October 2020,” Streett said, “I never imagined it could come this far. Due to COVID-19, my involvement in theatre at the time was limited, so I decided to write a musical for my own enjoyment. I was inspired by the work of Thornton Wilder, Anais Mitchell, Duncan Sheik, and the photographs of Dorothea Lange.”
The production runs around two hours with a 10-minute intermission.
