Characteristics of a great coach

Great coaches mentor student-athletes. A coach in most cases plays key roles in an athlete’s life. Some play the role of counselor, teacher, uncle, father and coach.

Teaching institutions put coaches in positions of trust just like parents do. But what happens when a coach degrades a young student. What if a coach told a kid that he was a liar and lacked character instead of trying to encourage the student and mentor him? You better believe that young student-athlete will remember what that coach said for the rest of his life. What should happen to the coach? In most cases he would be relieved of his duties, especially if it’s a reoccurring act. Coaches along with student-athletes need to know that wearing a uniform or a school jacket, they represent not only the school but everyone in the community and alumni, EVERYONE. And if a coach fails to represent a school with professionalism it might be best that they kick rocks as they walk down the street.
