A Eufaula man charged with assault and threatening to perform an act of violence at the Family Dollar store in January on South Main Street pleaded guilty to the allegations at a hearing on March 19.
Special Judge Brian McLaughlin sentenced Daniel Thomas Vargas, 36, to a 5-year suspended sentence on the charge of assault & battery with a dangerous weapon and to 6-month suspended sentence for making the threat.
Vargas has also been ordered to stay away from Eric Ritter, the alleged victim of the assault.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Eufaula Police Officer Freeman Degraffenreid, on Jan. 19 Vargas threw a piece of concrete at Ritter, striking him in the palm of his left hand causing it to bleed.
The suspect left the scene but was arrested a few hours later.
The incident caused a brief closing of the high school, which is located west of Family Dollar.
