The Muskogee Roughers redeemed an early loss to Stillwater as they defeated the Pioneers 28-26 for the Class 6AIi State Championship. The Roughers got revenge when they rallied behind four total touchdown performances by quarterback Jamarian Ficklin and a late stop on a potential game-tying two-point conversion try, at Chad Richison Stadium in Edmond. Friday’s win gave Muskogee its first state championship since 1986. “This was a tough one. They (Stillwater) are really tough, mean and well coached. I did everything I knew to put our kids in a position to have an opportunity. They played their hearts out and gave it everything, both teams did. I don’t want to have to play them for a while. I’m so proud of this team, the community of Muskogee and our head coach. This is awesome and we’re going to enjoy it for a while,” Muskogee offensive coordinator Chris Risenhoover said.
Muskogee’s victory in the Oklahoma Class 6AII state championship marks a significant triumph for the team, ending a 37-year-long state championship drought.
