The Abundance of the Heart

Hilltop Church of Christ

Biblically speaking the “heart” is man’s thinking capacity. Pro 23:7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he … That which controls his activities of life. That this is the control is stated by Christ in attributing sin to the intennt of one’s “heart.” Mat 5:28 But I say unto you. That whosever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Mat 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth god things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. And the evidence of the heart’s determination, Mat 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

The accusation against today’s society is apparent when the “speech” of today is considered. Mat 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Evil speech comes from the abundance of content in the heart/ mind. The destruction of the earth in Noah’s day is attributed to the heart; Gen 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Does not that description fit the societies of today that pursue evil in every accessible sense? “Evil continually” the imagination of the thoughts of the heart?

The pursuit of evil has become the hallmark of today. The changing of civil law to abet the attitude and activities of evil cannot change the nature of that evil, nor the end result. The evil of Sodom and her sisters is referenced in a multitude of scriptures, not only in the Old Testament but especially in the new; Jud :7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Jud 1:8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.

Inspiration commands, Eph 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. 2Co 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. Will we respond or suffer the same as those who practice such?
