Irma Lee McCalvey gave up golfing almost four years ago.
She was getting close to 100 years old and couldn’t swing the clubs like she used to.
As she approaches her 100th birthday, on April 11, she may not play golf but she still mostly takes care of herself, living alone in a gated community at Bridgeport Dunes on the lake northwest of Eufaula.
“I’m just two doors down,” said her daughter, Ella Degiacomo. “She doesn’t drive, but I’m right there. She pretty much takes care of herself.” Her husband, Cornelius “Connie” McCalvey, passed away 18 years ago at the age of 88.
Ella will be hosting a birthday party for Irma on April 8 at 2 p.m.
Born in Mena, Ark., Irma has lived in Eufaula for about 40 years.
She held a variety of jobs over the years, but mostly stayed home and raised three children.
And golfed. She and her husband loved to golf.
“I never did ride a golf cart,” Irma said.
Now, her passion is bridge.
And taking care of her garden.
And shopping. “I love to shop,” Irma said.
